How to reduce ping in CS2

High ping in Counter-Strike 2 is the delay between your actions and the server's response: your shots don't register and enemies teleport. Some causes are on your end, others come down to which server you pick. Let's tackle both.

What causes high ping

  • A distant server - the farther it is geographically, the higher your ping.
  • Wi-Fi instead of a cable - a wireless connection adds latency and instability.
  • Background downloads - torrents, updates, and streams saturate your connection.
  • An overloaded or weak server - also causes lag, even if your own ping is low.

How to reduce ping - step by step

  1. 1Connect your PC to the router with a cable (Ethernet) instead of Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Close downloads and apps that use the internet.
  3. 3Pick a server closer to you - the monitoring shows the ping for each server, so sort by it.
  4. 4Check your in-game ping with the cq_netgraph 1 command (the replacement for the old net_graph).
  5. 5Reboot your router if your ping has been spiking for a while.

Pick a server with low ping

The easiest way to play without lag is to connect straight to a low-ping server. On MonitoringCS2 the ping is shown for every server and refreshes every 30 seconds; sort the list by ping and pick the closest one. For how to connect, see the "How to join a CS2 server by IP" guide.

Frequently asked questions

What affects ping in CS2?+

Ping depends on the distance to the server, the quality of your internet connection and network congestion. The closer the data center and the more stable the link, the lower the latency.

How do I pick a low-ping server in CS2?+

In matchmaking settings choose the regions and data centers nearest to you, and in the server browser sort by the Ping column. A server in your own country almost always gives lower latency.

What is better for ping in CS2 - wired or Wi-Fi?+

A wired Ethernet connection is almost always more stable and gives lower ping than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is prone to interference and latency spikes that hurt gameplay.

What is packet loss and how do I spot it in CS2?+

Packet loss is when some data never reaches the server, causing jerky movement. You can see it with the net_graph 1 command in the loss and choke fields.

Can a VPN help reduce ping in CS2?+

Usually a VPN adds an extra hop and increases ping. It only helps in rare cases of poor ISP routing, where the path through the VPN happens to be shorter.
